AzPOST Police General Instructor Program on Thatcher campus

Thatcher, AZ— Eastern Arizona College’s Administration of Justice (AJS) Department offered an AzPOST Police General Instructor Program in early August welcoming officers, deputies, detectives, and command staff from law enforcement agencies throughout southeastern Arizona.
The 40-hour course of instruction is an accelerated and intense study of both knowledge and proficiency skills which results in state certification. In-depth topics of instruction included adult learning, training liability, performance objectives, creative presentations, authentic assessments, and lesson plan format and development.
In addition to numerous timed impromptu speeches, students were required to prepare and teach both a seven-minute and final 15-minute lesson plan that were graded by trained evaluators.
Per state standards, students enrolling in the course must be selected by their agencies as having high instructor aptitude, a minimum of two years street experience, and be willing to instruct topics for both their agencies and police academies state-wide.
Steve Johnson, EAC’s AJS instructor, was assisted by Jon Heiden (AzPOST), Sgt. Jerry Garcia (U of A PD), Undersheriff Jeff McCormies (Graham County SO), and Officer Jodi Stevens (Oro Valley PD).
“This is an intense course of study. It takes a highly motivated student to complete it. Not all students pass and receive their instructor certification; however, due to the high caliber of students in the class every one of them earned their certification and did a fantastic job,” said Johnson.
Offering the class at EAC saved local agencies in Graham, Greenlee, Gila, and Cochise Counties training funds by not having to send them to Tucson or Phoenix for a week of training.
